Making Story Time Fun!

Making Story Times and Virtual Story Time Engaging and Fun

Think of story time like a recipe. To be really engaging and fun for young children, it needs a few key ingredients:

  1. Child involvement: You can’t check to see if your kids are responding but, it is really important to add in simple questions and expectant pauses in the story. It is a great way to keep kids involved in story time.

  2. Props: Props are fun in person AND on video. Props can be puppets, flannel board stories, cut outs of colors, or even you.

  3. Animation: Think about the last audio book you listened to. Was it interesting to listen to? If so, what made it interesting? I bet you answered that it was the narrator that made it interesting. Animated voices and facial expressions make stories come alive! And the best thing about reading them to children is that they don’t care if your horse impression actually sounds like a horse.

  4. Bring the story around so kids can see: In the “virtual world” this means holding the camera at an angle so kids can see it OR running the story in front of the camera as you read each page.
